SRA-Europe 2010 Annual Meeting

The 19th SRA Europe Annual meeting was held from 21st -23rd June 2010 at one of England’s oldest and most prestigious institutions - Kings College, London, UK. We were welcomed to the conference by Sir Lawrence Freedman, Vice-Principal of Kings College, Ann Enander, President of Society of Risk Analysis-Europe, and Rick Reiss President of the Society of Risk Analysis.

The special theme of the conference was Risk, Governance and Accountability reflecting the increasing centrality of risk analysis to decision-making in a wide range of policy and organisational contexts. Conference delegates were fortunate to observe and participate in 5 outstanding plenary sessions that picked up on different aspects of this theme over the course of the conference: Risk Governance and Precaution (Jonathan Wiener, Nick Pidgeon and Ethel Forsberg); Science, Risk and the Public (Baruch Fischhoff, Alan Irwin, and David Demeritt); Risk Management and Regulation in the 21st century: Lessons for Europe (Geoffrey Podger, Steve Wearne, Mikael Karlsson); Finance, Risk and Governance (Michael Power, Steve Priddy, and Jon Danielsson); Accounting for Risk Based Governance (W.Kip Viscusi; Julia Black and Ronan Palmer) .

Over 250 delegates from Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Australia attended and participated in a full programme of individual papers and symposia during 8 parallel sessions.  Delegates felt the full benefit of being located in the heart of London and the Conference Dinner was on the boat ‘Hispaniola’ moored in the shadow of the London Eye.

At the SRA-E business meeting, the Executive Committee were pleased to make a presentation to the winners of the two SRA-E Student Scholarships. Both Karen Boll (IT University of Copenhagen) and Jörgen Sparf (Mid Sweden University) will receive a contribution worth 500 euro to their conference expenses.

All the delegates were very appreciative of the excellent efforts of the local organising committee led by Prof Ragnar Lofstedt and Dr Henry Rothstein and including Prof George Gaskell, Dr Renee Miller and Dr Anne Katrin Schlag.
